Hudson Bay Acquisition

Hudson’s Bay Acquisition – Lease Transfer Sparks Legal Debate

The retail world is buzzing. As part of Hudson’s Bay acquisition, the company is in the middle of a major lease transfer deal. The company plans to sell up to 28 store leases to B.C. billionaire Ruby Liu and transfer about dozen landlord leases as part of the deal. But there’s a catch and the retail landlords are pushing back. They don’t want Liu to take over the leases. This resistance could slow down or even block the deal.

Monica Beffa shared her thoughts in a recent CTV News interview. She explained that landlords may have more control than people realize. “They can challenge the lease transfer if they believe the new tenant isn’t a good fit,” she said. Her comments shed light on the legal hurdles Hudson’s Bay may face.
This isn’t just about retail. It’s about real estate law, tenant rights, and the future of Canadian malls. The outcome of this acquisition could reshape the retail landscape.
